目前美國每年咖啡消耗量高佔全球⒛%以上，是最大的咖啡消費國，但在英國早期殖民期間，北美洲的歐洲移民以茶葉飲料爲主，咖啡很少見，咖啡館文化遠不如歐洲。當時北美並無獨立的咖啡館，咖啡飲料均在酒店、旅館、客棧和餐廳販賣，最知名的綠龍咖啡館（GrcenDragon）看來像酒館和客棧複合式經營，與歐洲饒富人文氣息的咖啡館大不相同。北美早期咖啡不興，應該和英屬東印度公司大力推廣茶葉有關。也就是說，美國早期只有喝茶文化，咖啡只是客棧或酒吧的附屬品。</div>

有趣的是，一七七三年十二月爆發波士頓茶葉事件後，北美移民爲了抗拒英國加稅，開始改喝咖啡，成就了今日龐大的咖啡消費量，這是咖啡史上的一大浪漫趣事。</div>

事件是這樣的，英國於一七六五年通過印花稅法，試圖增加北美殖民地稅收。北美移民對於進口稅大增，羣起抗議，並走私茶葉，拒買英國輸入的高價中國茶和印度茶，造成東印度公司茶葉銷量銳減。</div>

―七七三年，英國國會通過茶稅法，允許東印度公司直接銷售茶葉至北美，大幅降低成本，以便和北美走私的茶葉竟爭。同年十二月，首批低價傾銷的茶磚運抵波士頓港，美國第二任總統約翰 亞當斯（John Adams）率領一百多人打扮成印第安人模樣攻佔貨船，把三百多箱英國茶丟進海里。</div>

此一事件成了美國獨立戰爭的先聲。自此，北美的歐洲移民爲抵抗英國統治，拒喝英國茶，改喝咖啡，咖啡也成了當時象徵愛國的飲料，美國人從此染上咖啡癮，綠龍咖啡館也成了美國獨立運動人士最常駐足的場所。<br />
